What Was Your First Computer?

Yes, this is a football blog. And no, this post isn’t very football-related, but it’s something that we all have in common. We’ve all, at one time or another, used a computer to surf the Internet and visit EPL Talk. So I thought it’d be interesting to hear from you, the readers, what your first computer was so we can get a better idea of how far we’ve all come.

The idea for the story came up after I had a conversation on Twitter the other night with EPL Talk reader Azbats. I Source: EPL Talk RSS Feed

NLCS Game Five: Dodgers @ Phillies

Much like their SoCal counterparts, the Dodgers are down 3-1 in the League Championship Series and have their backs to the wall. I know some fans enjoy seeing Joe Torre and his club thisclose to elimination for whatever reason, but if the Yanks do move on to the World Series, it would be in their best interests for the Dodgers to mount a comeback and push the Phightin’s to seven tough games.

Report: D.A. Could Press Cable Charges Tomorrow

Tim Kawakami of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS reports this morning:

Something could happen tomorrow. We don’t know what the Napa Valley DA will do, and there are plenty of conflicting indications, but it’s possible the DA announces that he will press charges against Tom Cable.

If that happens, it’s almost certain that Al Davis would either suspend or fire Cable with cause. (Though the real cause would be the JaMarcus Russell Offense’s continued fizzle.)

Foreman’s Son ‘Pokes’ Winehouse, New Breasts

Frankly speaking, George Foreman’s sons have not been pulling their weight. There’s what, five of them? And as far as I know they haven’t been in the news at all — not so much as a DUI. Feh. But wait, what’s this?

George Foreman III, 27, is possibly dating Amy Winehouse? Now we’re talkin’. Actually they’re probably not dating, but what Foreman did recently makes for an infinitely better headline: He poked her on Facebook. And apparently she poked him back. Is that howSource: SPORTSbyBROOKS RSS Feed

Honduran Coup Leader Invites Bornstein To Lunch

It’s not every day that the leader of a Central American political coup invites a U.S. soccer player to his (recently acquired) country for a little celebration. But the U.S. National team’s Jonathan Bornstein received that honor on Thursday, after his equalizing goal in stoppage time against Costa Rica propelled Honduras into the final automatic World Cup qualifying berth.

It will be Honduras’ first trip to the World Cup in 27 years, and that nation is understandably going nuts,Source: SPORTSbyBROOKS RSS Feed

Chris Bosh Saves The Internet For 800+ Athletes

There probably aren’t any statistics to bear this out, but we’re pretty damned sure that the lowest ratio of IQ-to-income among all professions belongs to athletes, who display an uncanny ability to blow through unholy amounts of money as soon as they get it. That’s not news, of course, but it makes them prime targets for people looking for an easy dollar.

Mejia to the pen in 2010...

Jennry Mejia is 20 y/o top pitching prospect who is on the fast track for Flushing. The hard throwing righty spent half the season in AA, and the highly competitive youngster injured a finger on his pitching hand trying to push himself.
Mejia is in the Arizona fall leagues, his first appearance, today; was attended by Omar, Jerry and most of the Mets organizational staff.

Sophia Bush, by popular demand … brothels are close to becoming real popular in Canada … celebrities fighting on twitter! … the Atlantic names its ‘Brave Thinkers‘ … Baltimore’s celebrity smackdown has Michael Phelps, Stacy Keibler, Cal Ripken and Ray Lewis all in the same bracket … January Jones in GQ … for those of you with kids: “How Young Is Too Young To Be Slutty Whatever for Halloween?” … that Seth Green “mugging” from last week appears to have been stagedSource: The Big Lead RSS Feed

Chamberlain’s Old Mansion Still Uniquely His Own

First of all, an aside - has it really been a decade since Wilt Chamberlain passed away? Really. Damn. 10 years and a day. Luckily, just as Chamberlain seemed larger than life, so too do many of his accomplishments stand longer than his life. What’s that? Oh, we’re talking about basketball, of course. You… you’re not still thinking about the tens of thousands of women he conquered, are you?

Pouring Salt on the Wound

It didn't take long for Red Sox Nation to suffer more pain yesterday as the Yankees advanced to the ALCS.  The New York Daily News also took a moment to point something out:

Mariano Rivera is still the best closer after Red Sox and Twins blow it.

Papelbon, who hadn't surrendered a run in 26 postseason innings, allowed two inherited runners to score in the eighth and gave up three more of his own in the ninth, highlighting just how much the Yankees don't take their closer for Source: Fenway West RSS Feed

UNM Coach Resigns After Face-Punching Incident

It’s fair to say that even halfway through the regular season, the inaugural year of the Mike Locksley regime at UNM has been an unqualified mess. We’ve documented the litany of off-field scandals already - culminating in the surreal incident where Locksley punched his wide receivers coach, J.B. Gerald, in the face - but let’s go ahead and add “0-6″ to that list, with the Lobos joining only five other I-A teams who still have donuts in the W column this late.

0-fer Anaheim

The Red Sox bats remained silent in SoCal as Jared Weaver held them to just 2 hits in 7 1/3 innings.  Pedroia, Ortiz, Bay, Lowell, Drew and Gonzalez all had goose eggs at the plate in the game. The Red Sox lone run came in the 4th when Ells led off the inning with a triple and V-Mart drove him in with a base hit.

Beckett was dealing for most of the game but he walked Vlad to start the 7th and then the Angels took the lead and did not look back.  The Sox did get the tying run up inSource: Fenway West RSS Feed

The Roundup: Those Animals Are Crazy

Did you see Couples Retreat last night? You did? Please leave now. No, seriously, leave. Don’t make me chase you. Did I mention I saw Zombieland the other night? I did? Good.

My favorite Spice Girl. As I watched some of the SG videos last night for research, it seems that Mrs. Beckham was seldom used. I’m sure she was super talented, but she definitely could have been utilized a bit more.

NFL Late Games Open Thread

What a bunch of great games we just witnessed! (I wrote this at 11am) Could the 4pm games possibly match the action and excitement we just watched? We’ll just have to observe!

Buf @ Mia - Win or lose, TO’s room has a great view.
Jets @ NO - TBL can’t decide between the reverse-jinx and the straight jinx. Either way, he’s wearing his favorite hat.
Dal @ Den - Even the Bronco’s t-shirts were on steroids when they were winning Super Bowls.
STL @ SF - A battle Source: The Big Lead RSS Feed

UFL Starts Thursday! (If Only I Could Buy Tickets)

The United Football League begins play ON THURSDAY with the California Redwoods taking on the Las Vegas Locomotives in Vegas at UNLV’s Sam Boyd Stadium. (Coincidentally where the XFL played its first game.)

(Obtaining Right To Witness Coaching Wizardry Of Fassel Not-So-Facile)

Seeing as I have Direct TV and the game is on Versus (so I’m screwed), I was actually thinking about trekking from L.A. out to Vegas to take in the game. So I logged onto the UFL’s official siteSource: SPORTSbyBROOKS RSS Feed

The 2016 Olympics: Welcome To The City Of Jesus

Although things aren’t too cheerful at the White House right now, there’s much banging of percussion instruments and dancing the Samba in other parts of the world over Rio de Janeiro’s choice as host of the 2016 Olympic Games. Exotic beaches. Beautiful women. These guys. It’s gonna be the world’s biggest party, right?

Well, maybe, but I’ve seen enough episodes of “City Of Men” to know that there may be pitfalls to this plan. In a lot of ways, Rio is the worst possibleSource: SPORTSbyBROOKS RSS Feed

Miked-Up Mediasaurus Napalmed Into Stone Age

Apparently WFAN-AM’s Mike Francesa spent one of the 27 consecutive live hours of his daily show (live from Queens!) ripping into ESPN.com columnist Bill Simmons. Called him a “stooge” and a “fraud.”

In the old days, if Simmons was a newspaper columnist, he’d have very little recourse. Back when Francesa mattered to under-54s outside the Tri-State, sports radio was the medium of immediacy.

Not anymore.
